Background Information

Refugees contribution to the community and the economy:
Refugees and the economy: Australian Refugees Group will highlight the positive contributions refugees are having on Australian economy, not only sharing stories, becoming just a bleeding heart.

Former refugees / Asylum Seekers contribute greatly to the Australian economy in a number of areas, in the health sector where they are filling much needed roles, working as nurses, doctors, GPs, personal care assistance, former refugees are bringing their experience into the social welfare sector. As well as providing much needed expertise in the education sector, as well as in the service sector, consultancy, accountants, the mining sector, agricultural sector, food production.
Former refugees have also been responsible for the establishment of a number of small businesses across the nation employing both refugee and non-refugee Australians.

Former refugees are also making major contributions in the housing markets, in private rental properties and in the purchase of properties. Former refugees also support Australia’s public transport system, as many newly arrived Australians are unable to drive.

Australia is suffering from an aging population, which will lead to strains on our social welfare system as the baby boomer generation retires and will need to access aged care pensions. Australian’s are no longer having enough children to achieve replacement levels, which will present a problem in the future as there will be no longer people to fill the gaps that will develop in the workforce as more and more Australians leave the workforce.
In addition to participating in the workforce the presence of refugees in Australia has also provided numerous employment and developmental opportunities for non-refugee Australians in social welfare, medical, humanitarian services and educational areas.
